Autograph letter signed from Neal Dow to "My dear friend" (1853 July 2) and a bank check, signed by Neal Dow (1891 Oct. 29). Letter is written from Syracuse, N.Y., and is regarding his upcoming travels to Canada, campaigning for prohibition laws. The bank check is from Swan & Barrett, Bankers, Portland, Me., paying to the order of J.A.S.[?] & Son (Windows & Doors) for $100.00, signed by Neal Dow.

Dow was born in Portland, Maine on March 20, 1804, the son of Josiah Dow and his wife, Dorcas Allen Dow. Josiah Dow was a member of the Society of Friends (commonly known as Quakers) and a farmer originally from New Hampshire. Dorcas Allen was also a Quaker, and a member of a prosperous Maine family headed by her prominent grandfather, Hate-Evil Hall. They had three children, of whom Neal was the middle child and only son.
